Sihuas (2680 m) is situated about 4 hours north of Pomabamba in the valley of the Rio Chico. It's a long way from Huaraz but a good place to stay a night if you are making your way through the Callejon de Conhucos valley as it has good accommodation to offer.
With the decline of most of the nearby mines it is now a center for learning where many students from the area have gathered. An old church built by the Spaniards and the colonial architecture around the old plaza are worth checking out.

On August 5 is the yearly fiesta in honor of the Virgen Maria de las Nievas. Jose Javier Pareja, an engineer native to Sihuas wrote down the history of Sihuas in a book. He tells us the foundation story of Sihuas: "According to the legend villagers that had come down from the mountains saw the virgen at the current site of Sihuas and asked her to come up with them to the mountain village. She agreed but disappeared the next day. Two more times did the villagers convince her to come up the mountain with them. When the Virgen de las Nieves again disappeared the villagers decided that she wanted to live below in the valley and that they should move the village to where she wanted to be. Thus Sihuas was founded at the site of the Rio Chico." >>>>> |

Sihuas has a pleasant warm climate all year round. Nice to stroll around the city center in the evening when the town is still quite lively thanks to the large student population. Some students recommended us to go check out the local disco but it was closed when we arrived leaving us the impression that nothing much really is going on in town. That is arguably also the attraction of relaxed Sihuas. When we asked a restaurant owner native to Sihuas what there is to do in town he responded saying: "Nothing. But I like the town and will stay here until I die even though my children and many of my friends left to the coast." Decline in the area started when the hacienda that controlled the area closed during the Agrarian Reform of the late 1960's. |

The population of Sihuas grew fast when silver, copper and minerals where discovered in the region. After most of these resources were gone, the town was left with an overpopulation problem resulting in unemployment and the necessity to import food from the coast.
There is potential for tourism: The 17th century church with it's meters wide walls is very impressive and the colonial houses and well preserved plaza make you feel like you wander around in colonial times. Don't confuse it with the Plaza de Armas on the other side of the Rio Chico in the higher modern part of Sihuas. >>>>>

We found the population of Sihuas very welcoming and recommend you to stay a night in Sihuas if you are traveling from Caraz - Corongo to Pomabamba in the Callejon de Conchucos. Walk around the area and check out the nearby hot springs. huaraz.com
