July 15-17 Fiesta of Chavin If you are not interested in the ancient culture of Chavin , why don't you visit Chavin during it's charming festival in July. Apart from local singers you may enjoy the firework spectacle at night or the bullfights. |

The festival in honor of the virgin Carmen starts slowly but heats up as people get more 'caliche' streaming in their blood. This herbal drink is served with 'chicha' to warm you up ('caliche') or without alcohol ('emoliente'). Stalls selling it are everywhere in the Plaza de Armas. |

Before the virgin gets carried around the central square in procession, paintings are carefully prepared on the street made of colored wood and plant material. This typical Peruvian custom guarantees the colorful carpet that the local virgin deserves. |

The festival continues until the 19th. The last days you may witness bullfights. Ask around which famous local Huayno singer is chartered and where they play. The dance is rather introverted and simple to learn so join in with the enthusiastic crowd. (K.K.) |
