Do you have an afternoon off? For one of the nicest short treks around Huaraz you need no more than a few hours. Just walk (or better take a taxi) up to the cross of 'el Mirador' and walk in southern direction for about an hour. |
From there you will have a wonderful view over Huaraz with specatular cliffs just at your feet. Be careful not to fall down. (K.K.) |

It should take about 15 minutes and cost something between 5 and 10 soles to get up by taxi to the cross of 'el mirador', the viewpoint of Rataquenua. It is not recommendable to walk up to the cross as the road is winding and dusty without much to see. |
At some time there must have been plans to create a restaurant at 'el mirador'. Now there is only a cross and concrete construction full of graffiti. And a great view over Huaraz naturally. Don't stop at the cross: this is where your hike starts. (In past years unfortunately robberies have been reported here. Things seemed to have improved but be aware.) |

Continue walking up the road (or let your taxi take you for 2 soles extra) until you see an area of planted eucalyptus trees. That is about where the steep sandy cliff of Rataquenua starts. From there keep on walking for about an hour following the road until the stone wall on your right hand stops. |
From there just walk down the paths towards Huaraz. I recommend you take your taxi up around 15:00. Then you will be just after the hottest time of day and you can see the orange sunset on the stone cliff from up close at around 18:00 to return just before dark. Just the perfect walk for a lazy day. |
