Trekking
The mountains around Huaraz are some of the most attractive climbing targets in the world. Andean climbing on ice is especially dynamic due to the easy access to the most interesting trails, which allow several climbs in one day before returning to the city for a well-deserved rest.
Possibilities go from simple few hour climbs on easy peaks for excusionists, to virgin routes with almost vertical flanks of rocks and ice on rarely frequented peaks for professional mounteneers.

  • Weather is the main element to look upon in determinating the best season for safe and reliable climbs. If attempting to climb the walls (west and southwest) of the big mountains, then May and June are the best months. The most popular classic climbs can be done from May through August.
  • Access to the mountains is easy and fast during these months.
Very rough roads lead to small villages located at the foothill of the mountains, from where ascensions can be started with no logistic problems because there is transportation leaving Huaraz towards these villages every morning.
  • Climbers with little experience can hire mountain guides in Huaraz (see tour operators). It is also possible to purchase equipment and food at camps located high in the mountains.
  • The best maps on the Cordillera Blanca are available at the National Geographic Institute (Lima).

  • Huaraz is the place for climbers to get information concerning recent climbs and snow conditions. Most of the required equipment and food for the ascension can also be obtained here.
  • There are several technical difficulties. Therefore, climbers must be well informed before the beginning of the ascension, choosing the routes according to their experience and equipment.
